Iron Mountain is a city in the state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city has a population of 7,518. It is the county seat of Dickinson County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The city got its name from the iron ore that was found nearby.
Immaculate Conception Church
The Immaculate Conception Church is an historic structure in Iron Mountain, Michigan. It was built in 1902 and is a state historic site. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The Italian Catholic community settled in Iron Mountain in the late nineteenth century, and worshipped at St. Joseph’s in the town’s center. However, in 1890, Italian Catholics in the north side of town organized a new church and received permission to establish a separate parish. They constructed a frame church near the current church. Sadly, this original church burned down in 1893, and construction on a replacement church began in June 1902.
The church is located at 500 Blaine St. The church is part of the Marquette Catholic Diocese. The Immaculate Conception Church is open to the public and offers a number of parish events. During the fall, the church holds a Fall Bazaar. This event includes a spaghetti dinner, money raffle, basket raffle, and craft sale. Raffle drawings are scheduled for 1 p.m.
Cornish Pumping Engine and Mining Museum
Located on the corner of Kimberly Avenue and Kent Street in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the Chapin Mine Steam Pump Engine, also known as the Cornish Pump, is the largest reciprocating steam-driven engine in the United States. It was built in 1898 and is a must-see attraction in the area.
